The Ontario Medical Students’ Association (OMSA) is aware of the recent rise in student-led protests on campuses across Ontario surrounding the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. We acknowledge the passion and commitment of students utilizing their voices for advocacy, reflecting their engagement and responsibility as future medical professionals.
OMSA affirms the fundamental rights of medical students and all students in Ontario, including the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, integral to our societal values. These rights are essential for the development of a just, equitable, and humane society—core values in the practice of medicine and medical ethics.
We advocate for the safety and respect of all individuals participating in peaceful protests while emphasizing the importance of responsibility and non-violence. It is crucial that these activities are conducted without fear of violence, retaliation, or undue interference from law enforcement or other entities. Educational institutions and their governing bodies must ensure a safe environment that fosters open dialogue and the respectful exchange of ideas.
In solidarity with our peers, OMSA is committed to upholding these principles and will continue to support our students through advocacy and education. We believe that protecting the rights to peaceful protest and freedom of expression is vital to nurturing inclusive and responsive healthcare professionals and a healthier society.
OMSA calls upon all stakeholders within the Ontario medical education system and the broader community to respect and protect the rights of medical students to engage in peaceful protest and freedom of expression.
Officially founded in May 1974 during the Ontario Medical Association’s AGM, the Student Section of the OMA was started using the acronym “OMSA” (short for Ontario Medical Students Association) in 2004.
