Strategic and Financial Plan

Executive Summary

The Ontario Medical Student Association (OMSA) is a student-run organization that functions as the dedicated student voice for Ontario’s medical students. OMSA advocates for students on topics relating to their education, wellness, and safety. OMSA’s leadership consists of Executive Council members that are elected yearly at an Annual General Meeting (AGM) by medical students from across Ontario. The Executive Council collectively oversees the organization’s various portfolios and committees (see Appendix A).
OMSA’s first-ever Strategic Plan was created during the 2019-2020 year, with the intention of shaping the organization’s efforts to support the development and
sustainability of long-term initiatives spanning longer than any individual council member’s term. Since 2020, Ontario medical students have encountered many new
challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, economic pressures, and provincial policy changes.
The first Strategic and Financial Plan was intended to guide OMSA through to 2024. With the end of its mandate this year, our organization once again engaged in the process of deep reflection and analysis to determine how best to continue to serve Ontario’s medical students over the next 5 years. In addition to input from OMSA’s elected leadership, this plan represents the voice of Ontario medical students from all six medical schools. Five key priority areas were identified: equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization; student wellness; financial support; career exploration; and collaboration across medical schools. We will prioritize our strategic goals in these
areas through a variety of objectives, tracked by metrics of success, and guided by an implementation strategy–all of which can be found in the document above.
