Student Services and Benefits

OMSA (through the OMA, CMA, CFMS and CFPC) offers many student services and benefits that you can take advantage of. Please contact your VP External or the provider organization for more information. Financial burden is one of the major concerns that medical students continually face, so please take advantage of these services. Please click on the category headings below to access information about the respective services.

Note: To utilize these benefits, you must be a member of the organization listed as the provider of the benefit. Please refer to this page for more information on how to become a member. 

Clerkship Stipend Program (Administered by the Ministry of Health)

  • Automatically administered to all final year Ontario medical students through their University
  • Valued at $750/ month for up to 12 months, depending on the length of studies
  • Must be administered to students via their institution at least once a quarter (i.e. minimum 4 deposits over the course of their final year)

Ontario Medical Students Bursary Fund (OMA/OMSA)

  • Named Bursaries: OMSBF Named Bursaries are $2,000 bursaries established by an individual or group to commemorate a physician’s achievements, in memory of a colleague or relative, to support a student pursuing a specific specialty, or from a certain area of the province.
  • General Bursaries: All students enrolled in an Ontario school of medicine are automatically eligible for a $3,000 Bursary.  Each university Financial Aid office will nominate the students who are in the greatest financial need. The total number of bursaries available each year is determined according to first year enrolment numbers at the school. Please note that Students do not need to apply for these bursaries.
  • Elective Bursaries: The Ontario Medical Foundation (OMF) offers two $500 bursaries per year to students at each of the six Ontario medical schools. These bursaries are specifically allocated to assist students enrolled in an elective program. Recipients are chosen based on factors including academic validity of the learning experience, location, adequate academic achievement, and need for assistance.

Officially founded in May 1974 during the Ontario Medical Association’s AGM, the Student Section of the OMA was started using the acronym “OMSA” (short for Ontario Medical Students Association) in 2004.
