About NORM

The Northern Ontario and Rural Medicine (NORM) Committee is a subcommittee of the Ontario Medical Students Association (OMSA). Our committee members consist of medical students studying across Ontario with interest in promoting rural generalist and specialist medicine!

We have three primary aims:

  1. Acknowledging the social, economic and geographical barriers to medical student engagement, the NORM facilitates student support and engagement in OMSA initiatives focusing on students from Northern Ontario. In addition, a separate working group will do the same for students from other medical schools in the province with rural satellite campuses.
  2. Acknowledging the gaps in accessibility and provision of healthcare to rural and Northern Ontario, with specific interest give towards Indigenous populations. Given the unique health care concerns in the North, the NORM aims to create and support advocacy initiatives and campaigns that seek to fill the awareness gap where possible.
  3. Acknowledging students studying in Southern Ontario who have limited access to opportunities in rural healthcare. Given that one of the predictors for successful recruitment of physicians to Northern, rural and remote communities involves training in these areas, the NORM seeks to create and/or support opportunities for Southern Ontario medical students to train in the North – opportunities such as observerships, electives, workshop and/or conferences are considered.

Resource

Our Committee

NORM consists of a Chair, Vice-Chair, and four portfolios. Please expand each section to learn more about each portfolio and their projects.

The Northern and Rural Student Engagement (NRSE) Committee consists of medical students studying at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, or at a rural satellite campus of other medical schools in Ontario. The aim of the NRSE committee is to advocate for improved access to urban-based professional development opportunities for NOSM and rural-based students through various projects and initiatives. Preference is given to applicants who are studying at NOSM or rural satellite campuses.

Our Projects And Resources

Canadian Residency Social Media Accounts

COVID-19, geographical challenges, and high financial costs are just a few of the barriers that Canadian medical students face in getting to know residency programs across the country. We have compiled the social media accounts of medical schools and residencies across Canada so that you can stay up to date with their activities, information sessions, and much more!

Northern and Rural Student Feature

If you’re interested in exploring rural medicine it can be both exciting and difficult to prepare for such unique settings, but preparation is essential! To help with your preparation, we are featuring 3 Ontario medical students here. Each from a different stage of medical training, they share their preparation, placements, and lessons learned. Enjoy!

The Northern Ontario and Rural Health Advocacy (NORHA) portfolio aims to address health care disparities existing within Northern and rural communities directly through our student-led advocacy initiatives including NORM in the News, a position paper focusing on the lack of mental health supports in rural and Northern areas, a commentary focusing on the pros and cons of virtual palliative care in rural areas and researching the importance of actively offering French language services to the Francophone population in health care. We also highlight the work of generalist physicians in Northern and rural Ontario through our Rural Doc Spotlight and created a handout focusing on employment opportunities for physicians in rural Ontario.

About This Committee

  • Our main goal is to facilitate interest in and opportunities for rural experiences for urban-based medical students. This includes but is not limited to raising awareness of existing rural opportunities, or creating communities and resources that make rural experiences more accessible. This portfolio is generally led by two students from any Southern schools not at a rural satellite campus.
  • Please reach out to our Chairs (contact information below) if you would like to learn more information about gaining rural opportunities at your school!

Past Projects/Resources

  • Ontario Undergraduate Medical Student Rural Electives and Rural Summer Opportunities Guide
  • NORM Homestays and Information Sharing Facebook Group
    • This Facebook group is facilitated by OMSA’s Northern Ontario Rural Medicine (NORM) Committee. The purpose of this closed group is to:
    1. Facilitate an informal online network between northern/rural and urban students to support homestays in Ontario and to reduce costs and barriers to northern/rural students pursuing urban experiences as well as to urban students pursuing northern/rural experiences.. Homestay refers to accomodation in someone’s home (e.g. a student’s apartment, a room within a family home, a family’s cottage etc). Homestays are on hold due to the ongoing SARS-Cov2 Pandemic, but we hope to bring them back when it is safe to do so
    2. Students undertaking rural and remote experiences in ONTARIO (observerships, electives, etc.) are encouraged to share information about their experiences using the “Northern/Rural Community Experiences” Google Form pinned at the top of this page. The resulting Google Sheet is pinned as well. This serves to assist other students in planning northern and rural experiences.
